A New Process for a New Start

We have all been there … you have just landed a new job and you have the daunting prospect of getting to grips with your new role, meeting the team, and trying to hide that first-day anxiety.  In many companies you are expected to hit the ground running and pick everything up as you go along without much introduction but what if there was a better way?!

I recently worked with a marketing agency that wanted to improve its onboarding process to ensure their new starters didn’t feel like they had been thrown in at the deep end without a life jacket.

Myself and the company director sat down and discussed how we could better their current process which was disjointed and uninformative.  It basically consisted of sending a brief email and signing them up to the software and communication platforms the business uses.  We thought in depth about what would make us feel more comfortable and less anxious as a new employee and then it was my job to implement these new ideas.

Firstly I drafted a friendly and informative welcome email that covered key information about what to expect in their first week. This was followed by a video from the Manager which was an introduction to the company and mentioned more details about their first day.  Then it was decided that there would be time for the starter to meet each member of the team, as an opportunity to connect with their new colleagues and ask any questions they may have about that particular department.  Finally, at the end of the first week a well-being email was drafted (which would be easily adapted for each candidate) to get some feedback on how they had found their first week and as an opportunity to discuss any concerns that may have arisen.

It was important for me to work closely with the company director on this project to ensure that I had completed these tasks in the appropriate tone of voice and incorporated any important information about the organisation.

For me, this was a project close to my heart as one of the reasons I wanted to become self-employed was due to working with companies that didn’t put their employees first and give them recognition for keeping their business running.  This is definitely a system that could work in any workplace and so if you would like to become ‘Boss of the Year’ get in touch so that we can discuss how to make your staff feel comfortable, included, and engaged!

‘As a busy business owner, Kayleigh is exactly the kind of help that you need to keep things running in the background. She is open to working on a wide range of tasks and is super flexible. She really helped us to implement our new onboarding emails and now runs these in the background, so I don’t even need to think about it anymore when a new starter joins’
